Cholangiography Forceps are used in conjunction with surgical removal of the gall bladder to perform a cholangiography to assure that stones from the gall bladder are not retained in the bile duct and related structures.
Cholangiogram Forceps comprise grasping forceps 10 with a side channel 14 and a catheter 20 that carries a needle 22 at its leading end. The grasping forceps are placed into the abdomen of the patient through a laparscopic cannula. The grasping forceps are closed proximate to and around the ampulla 32 of the gall bladder. This clamps the ampulla to prevent stones in the gall bladder from traveling into the bile duct. A dye is injected into the ampulla through the catheter.
This device for injecting dye into the ampulla and bile duct is useful in a variety of gall bladder surgeries. It is especially useful in preventing leakage of bile from the gall bladder into the common bile duct and to prevent stones in the gall bladder from traveling from the ampulla into the bile duct.
The device is designed to enter the stomach from the left side of the abdominal cavity, angling to the right. The grasping forceps have a central ratchet that enables the surgeon to grip the clamp 16. It is also designed with flat or serrated teeth to facilitate the clamping of the ampulla and to facilitate a more direct approach for the surgeon.
A catheter is extended from the handle and passed through the side channel in parallel with the grasping forceps. The clamp 16 is closed proximate to and around the proximal end of the ampulla 32 to prevent stones from traveling into the bile duct. The catheter is then directed into the ampulla on the opposite side of the proximal end of the ampulla to the gall bladder through the side channel.
